One of the main concerns of people eager to buy their first own e-bike is the proper way to manage the battery health. As we already mentioned in one of our previous articles (hyperlink), the average life expectancy of nickel batteries is around 500 charge cycles, and of lithium batteries - about 1000 charge cycles. After that, their efficiency gradually starts dropping, until they finally “die” after three to five years of normal exploitation.

Yet there are a few simple and easily manageable ways to prolong the life expectancy of your e-bike battery. If you make an effort to follow as many of them as possible regularly, you will significantly boost the health of the battery and therefore get to use it for a more extended period of time.

Store your e-bike wisely

Keep in mind details such as temperature, humidity, and weather conditions. Store your e-bike in a dry place, with temperatures no lower than 0C and no higher than 20C. Try not to leave it outside when the temperatures are freezing, as well as not to leave it in the bright sunlight for hours. It won’t do any immediate damage, but your battery will inevitably suffer in the long term.

In case you don’t have the opportunity to store the whole e-bike in those perfect conditions, simply detach the battery and bring it home with you.

Build a regular charging schedule

Apart from the initial “retracting” of the battery, try not to unload it completely, or do it as rarely as possible. The optimal battery charge is between 30% and 70% - if you build a habit for keeping it within those borders, you will benefit in the long run. The easiest way to do that is by charging the battery after every ride if that’s possible.

No riding doesn’t mean no charging

In case you aren’t riding your e-bike for a longer time, don’t let your battery lay forgotten and neglected. Charge it at least once every six months, or even two times for the same period, if that is achievable.

Only use the manufacturer’s charger

Other chargers may damage your battery or reduce its potential life expectancy. In case your original charger gets lost or broken, contact the manufacturer to order a new one or seek their professional advice on repairing it.

Take care of the hygiene

Keep the contacts, the battery, and the charger clean by regularly wiping off the dust or additional dirt with a soft damp cloth. This uncomplicated set of procedures can spare a lot of trouble in the long run.

Simple as they are, those measures can keep your battery in excellent shape for serving you well for as long as technically possible.
